Countdown to EPIC

June 2, 2018 is the date that the SLCH, BJH and WUSM academic practices will go live on the EPIC integrated system. Ambulatory, inpatient, emergency department documentation, and diagnostic testing results will be maintained in one system. EPIC will also be used for scheduling, WUSM registration and for professional billing. In the months ahead, we will learn more about EPIC functionality and how it directly impacts your work. Amit Mathur, MD, MRCP

Amit Mathur was born in New Delhi, India and comes from a family of engineers. Bucking the family trend, he graduated from Medical School at Delhi University in 1982. His Pediatric residency at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi with Prof. Santosh Bhargava, sparked his initial interest in Neonatology. With 12,500 deliveries a year and a 100 bed NICU, his initial training in neonatology was rich with exposure to diverse pathology. His subsequent residency training in Pediatrics occurred initially in Agra and New Delhi, and then in Scotland, UK where he trained for an additional 6 years in Pediatrics, attaining the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh in 1991. Along this journey, through family connections, he met his lovely wife Sunita, then a medical student at Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi. Yes! It was an arranged marriage and it is still going strong at 32 years!

Antibiotics warranted for kids with minor staph infections
The overuse of antibiotics has left some doctors questioning whether to give such drugs to children diagnosed with uncomplicated staph infections. Such infections often occur on the skin and look like a pus-filled bug bite.

Now, research led by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis indicates that prescribing antibiotics — in addition to lancing and draining staph-infected areas — reduces the risk of recurrent infections.

Noticing the warning signs of opioid abuse
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Local experts report opioid abuse is having a serious impact on our city’s kids. It’s affecting not just the users, but their families; and the youngest victims are oftentimes the children of addicts.

Dr. Jamie Kondis, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Washington University and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, is an integral part of Voices for Children, a nonprofit group that supports foster care kids with its noted CASA program.

Advocating for Child Health

The first meeting of a new interest group, Child Health Advocates is Nov. 10 from 8-9 am in NWT9A. Faculty and fellows wanting to learn how to become advocates for child health are invited to join. As pediatricians, we are all equipped with the knowledge needed to effect a change in policies related to children. Learn how to become involved whether you have only one hour or several per month. New Lactation Room NWT14215

There are currently 38 private lactation spaces across the medical campus. Rooms are equipped with a chair, table and electrical outlets. Some rooms have refrigerators, sinks, pumps and microwaves. NWT14215 is equipped with an Ameda pump. The NWT8145 lactation room is still available for use.

Reporting Phishing and SPAM –
When SPAM or PHISHING emails are received, there is a process in place to report them that will automatically update filters and let our Information Security Office be made aware of the issue as well.
The instructions for reporting SPAM or to update false positives are maintained at the following site.
Reporting via webmail is also effective for O365 filters.
To inform our Information Security Office of Phishing emails, please forward them to infosec@wustl.edu (if “forward as attachment” is used, that will provide more detail for the Security Office).
